With a team of four directors, an associate, two consultants and a number of accounting, administration and specialist staff, Walker Davey Searells has the expertise to easily solve most client problems.

The firm’s directors are: Simon Abbot, Craig Burrowes, Matt Donaldson and John Hendry.  All of the directors are degree-qualified chartered accountants with over 20 years experience.

The remaining staff have specialised skills, experience and qualifications that reflect the diverse skills required in their roles.  There is also a process of ongoing professional development and skill building designed to continually develop the skill-set of the staff and directors in all areas relating to the business.

Simon Abbot has been with Walker Davey Searells since 1992, having spent the first 3 years of his accounting career with one of the big 5 accounting firms. Simon has built a reputation within the firm and the Canterbury business community for having a creative and innovative way of approaching problems faced by his clients. This expertise has allowed Simon to solve some interesting problems for his clients.

Craig Burrowes returned to Walker Davey Searells after several years of experience in the corporate world. He has worked in a variety of roles in larger companies with his last position being Financial Controller of Dynamic Controls, a local manufacturing company whose parent company is US based and listed on the NYSE.

Through these roles and experiences he has gained an in depth understanding of how businesses of all sizes operate and the pressures and opportunities they face. Craig delivers practical and creative solutions that are business focused, decisive and packaged with a 'can do' attitude. "I look forward to using my own business experiences to help clients maximise their business and personal potential".

Craig and his partner Nicky have two young children, Jemma and Jake. When time permits he enjoys tennis, touch rugby, skiing and water sports. read less

Matt Donaldson came to the firm in 1996, having completed a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Canterbury. Matt works with clients to help them understand their business needs, and how to plan and get the most from their business. He has applied his skills to a wide range of industries, including manufacturing, real estate, the film industry, and tourism.

Matt has particular expertise in, and has worked with his clients in the following areas:

• Management reporting
• Buying & selling a business
• Property investment
• Tax planning and advice
• Structuring of investments
• Business valuations

Matt has a particular interest in helping trade-based clients and other small business owners setup their business systems on Xero. Working with his team they can setup a Xero file for any business, provide initial training and ongoing support.

John Hendry has been with Walker Davey Searells since he graduated from University in 1984. In that time he has worked his way up, and assumed the position of Director in 1999.

John has a special interest in the forestry, agriculture, property and food processing sectors, having helped set up and provide business advice to a number of successful businesses in these areas.

With his reputation and experience John is sought out for advice when common sense and a fresh perspective on the problem at hand are called for to resolve the situation. This ability to think outside of the traditional realms of accounting advice has resulted in John actively seeking bespoke solutions to meet client needs, and John has involved himself in many complex special projects over the years.

“I enjoy going the extra mile for my clients, and even though it means I have to work hard, it’s important to me that my clients’ expectations are not only met they are exceeded.”

John has been a keen sportsman most of his life, and there are few popular sports he has not played or been involved in. Currently horses are his latest interest, although he doesn’t ride (his children do that), he certainly now appreciates the time, effort and cost involved in maintaining a horse.

John is married to Karina and they have two children - Jackson and Alyssa. read less

During his time with our firm he has built up strong working relationships with many of his clients providing a service that is built around what is best for the client by offering them a creative and innovative way to approach issues in their business.

Mike has three sons - Ethan, Riley and Charley - who take up much of his spare time. His outside interests include mountain biking, football, cricket, fishing, movies and music. Jo is one of the odd ones out at Walker Davey Searells, being from the North Island (sunny Northland). Jo is a team manager, and really enjoys the wide variety of work, and developing long-term relationships with clients.

Outside of work, Jo is married to Graeme, a true-blue Cantabrian. She enjoys running, weight training, anything adrenaline related and is kept busy by her two children and their various sporting activities. read less

Darren specialises in accounting and compliance work for all types of entities with most of his time is spent producing monthly management reports, projections and carrying out project work. He also manages Simon Abbot’s team of accountants and assists with their training and development.

Apart from breaking to have children she has worked with Searells through the decades and is delighted to now be part of the Walker Davey Searells team.

She works with a variety of clients and has enjoyed the long term relationships that have formed over the years.

In her downtime Carissa will usually be training for Netball and is known to be very competitive both on and off the netball court and has played in the Premier league for the last few years in South Canterbury and is looking forward to playing here in Christchurch.

Louise and her husband breed and show Samoyeds and Tibetan Terriers. They are both All Breed judges and have judged extensively in New Zealand and internationally. As travel is another of their interests the combination of interests fit together very well. read less
